The Pass, Byron Bay 2023

This simple pencil drawing of The Pass at Byron Bay, by Sunshine Coast artist, Ali Atkinson, is what's called a Sense of Place work. A "sense of place" focuses on places to which an artist feels an emotional connection. These places can hold positive or negative emotions is can evoke positive emotions.

The Pass, Byron Bay captures Ali's connection to a place that holds wonderful childhood memories. He family owned an old holiday house in Byron when she was young, way before the place became bougie. Every Summer the family would travel many hours in a hot, unairconditioned car from far Western NSW to Byron for a month's holiday in paradise. This drawing is one of the studies for a painting done in triptych of the same name in 2023.
